Networking and Information Sources for Translators and Interpreters

The following is a sampling of organizations that may be in your language(s) and area(s) of specialization. We provide this list to stimulate your own thinking and research to find the most useful organizations.

How can these entities help NCTA members? Government and cultural organizations often receive calls asking for recommendations for translators and interpreters, while trade associations can provide business-to-business networking opportunities as well as terminology through their highly specialized trade publications. In addition, cultural and arts organizations offer opportunities to come into contact with other languages. The Translators and Interpreters Guild Voice recommends advertising or looking for clients in ethnic telephone books.

An excellent resource in searching for associations is the NPTA '95: National Trade and Professional Associations of the United States (Washington DC: Colombia Books, Inc., $75.00). Available at your local library in the reference section, this publication "1/4lists 7,500 national trade associations, labor unions, professional, scientific or technical societies and other national organizations composed of groups united for a common purpose." Some examples: Abrasives Engineering Society, American Ladder Institute, American Mosquito Control Association, National Association of Jewelry Appraisers. Most of these associations have publications that can be a valuable terminology resource for translators as well as providing a focused advertising opportunity.

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

As an example, we visited the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce (510) 549-7000, which offers many benefits to small businesses such as insurance, publications, seminars, business referrals and networking events. The Berkeley Chamber costs $200 per year. Guests are welcome to attend the breakfast and happy hour networking events held each month.
