This half-day workshop is aimed at independent contractors (freelance translators or interpreters) and will cover topics such as:
- What is an independent contractor?
- Setting up and starting your own business:
o Setting up and maintaining separate bank accounts and credit cards
o Getting a business license
o Maintaining business records
o Keeping financial records (Quickbooks, Peachtree, MS Money and Quicken)
- Self-employment and tax implications
o What is self-employment tax?
o What is Schedule C?
o Deductible expenses (vehicle expenses, business use of home, self-employment health care deduction, other deductible expenses)
- Tax planning
o Estimated taxes
o Retirement savings options: SEPS, small 401(k) plans, IRAs (Roth & traditional)
o Business forms: sole proprietorship vs. LLC, S-Corp, etc. and their tax/fee implications in California
There will be also be a question-and-answer period at the end of the workshop.
About the presenter:
Kermit Clum is the owner of Key Financial Solutions in Redwood City California, a full service tax and accounting firm operating since 2004. Key Financial Solutions specializes in the setup, support, planning and tax preparation for numerous small to mid-size corporations, sole-proprietors, partnerships and non-profit organizations. Their clients include retail stores, contractors, business consultants and manufactures.
A native of the Bay Area, Kermit was born in San Francisco and after graduating in 1996 with a degree in accounting from California State University at Chico moved back to the area to begin his career. His training includes time with several local CPA firms working with clients to setup, streamline and implement strategic financial goals. In addition, he has also held controllership roles with several startup companies where he successfully built and managed their internal accounting departments before starting his own company.
Currently he specializes in new business setup and strategic planning and with more than 15 years of experience has seen it all. In addition to his role as a CPA, Kermit is also a licensed notary public and certified QuickBooks professional who works with Intuit’s product development team evaluating and improving their product offerings.
ATA Continuing Education Credit: ATA-certified members will earn three Continuing Education points.
Early payment is advised in order to secure participation and help reach the workshop minimum participation. Unfortunately, workshops may occasionally have to be cancelled or rescheduled if the confirmed participation in advance is very low. NCTA will not be responsible for any consequential losses to participants arising from this.
Cancellation policy: Refunds are issued only if notice of cancellation is received one week prior to the applicable workshop date. A cancellation fee of $10 is charged for all cancellations.
