2:00 p.m.: Timor Leste: Experiences of a UN Portuguese-English Translator
The presenter will share his experience working as a linguist in Timor-Leste. The presentation will be divided into three parts:
1) Timor-Leste: background, languages and people;
2) UN Peacekeeping Mission in Timor-Leste, and specifically his work as translator with the UN Serious Crimes Investigation Team;
3) Language-related careers in the United Nations.
Robert Finnegan is an ATA-certified Portuguese-to-English translator. He is an ex-seminarian and missionary, US Army veteran (missile/radar repairman), freelance translator and interpreter since 1991, and was the founder of Contact Traduções in Brazil and owner from 1995-2008. He was a staff translator with the UN (2008-2013), and currently works as adjunct professor at NYU for Introduction to Portuguese-to-English Translation. During his career, he has worked in-house for World Bank projects, a leading beer brewery, an environmental NGO and a telecom company.
