The Fifth Joint NCTA-CAT Literature Translation Workshop
Literary Translation — an introduction for the novice and new ideas for the experienced literary translator
Overview
This workshop in literary translation is aimed at nonliterary translators and others looking for an introduction to the field. The first part will give an overview of practical topics such as choosing projects, rights and permissions, the publishing business, and the Internet and the literary translator. The second part will address what constitutes literary translation and then go into a hands-on analysis of a passage of fiction.
Those who sign up for the course will receive the passage (in Spanish) in advance and be asked to attempt a translation into English. The discussion, however, will not require knowledge of Spanish and will be applicable to all translation into English.
About the instructor Marian Schwartz has been translating Russian literature for over thirty years. She has published over three dozen book-length translations, as well as stories in numerous magazines, anthologies, and books. She has won several translation prizes.
The status and development of the translation profession has long been a focus of Schwartz’s concern, and for this reason she has been active in several professional organizations, notably the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), whose board she served on for ten years, the last two years as president, and the PEN Translation Committee.
ATA CE Credit: ATA-certified members will earn up to 3 Continuing Education Points.
